I recently read a book called The Selfish Cell. It is a book about cancer, and was recommended to me by one of my integrative cancer practitioner mentors. I would like to quote or paraphrase parts of this book, since the author did such an excellent job in his descriptions.
In the last article about "The Selfish Cell," we looked at the role of infections in the development of some cancers today. Let's go a little deeper into this.
Clinical observations begun during the 1990's have provided indications of the pivotal role of the immune system in the insurgence of cancer in humans today. Though today we see an increased number of people with infections that are often undetectable by the laboratory, (such as hidden viruses doing damage to specific organs and tissues), nevertheless we must note that viruses are not the sole cause of malignancy. However, cancer or neoplastic cells may resort to strategies to avoid immune recognition. This can include a thickening of the blood inside blood vessels, as well as a congestion in the lymphatic tissue that enables cancer cells to hide and proliferate there. Metastasizing cancer cells, especially when they are travelling in the blood stream, often will adopt a strategy of covering underneath a cloak of platelets to which they stick or adhere.
Cancer Cells, Healthy Cells: Spirit, Society, and Reality
What is Cancer?
Cancer is a condition in the body where our own cells no longer do their assigned roles (ie, be a liver cell, a colon cell, or a lung cell). Instead, these cancer cells just start selfishly hogging nutrients, fooling nearby cells into helping them, keep multiplying, and eventually destroy the body.
Chronic pain is epidemic today. It is almost always in our ligaments, tendons, and soft tissue, which have low oxygen tension and poor circulation. These are two double whammies. They lead to local tissue acidosis, and this is what creates pain. Pain is or can be debilitating, and it often impairs our immune and hormonal function. Everything in our bodies is interrelated.
